Risk-led equipment selection

Choose for the fire. Plan for people.

Portable extinguishers are intended for suitable small fires, when it is safe for a trained person to act. They are not a substitute for raising the alarm and escaping. The agent and rating must match the materials and hazards present.

Design & integration

Correct equipment. Clear responsibilities.

Selection, positioning and user awareness determine whether extinguisher provision is appropriate for the premises.

We assess the fire risks and required ratings before preparing the equipment schedule. Selection and positioning are informed by BS 5306-8, with suitable BS EN 3-rated products, accessible locations and clear signage. Specialist hazards, including combustible metals, require an agent specifically matched to the risk.

Product choice also considers the building use, possible contamination and environmental requirements. A change in stock, processes or occupancy may change the provision needed; replacing one extinguisher with another agent is not simply a like-for-like swap.

Servicing arrangements follow the relevant BS 5306-3 requirements. Staff awareness and training should make the limits of use clear: personal safety, raising the alarm and evacuation take priority over attempting to tackle a fire.
